February 25 - 95th anniversary of the birth of People's Artist of the RSFSR and BASSR Guzel Suleymanova

Guzel Galeevna Suleymanova was born in Ufa on February 25, 1927, in a working-class family. Her father, Shagali-agai, was from the village of Islambakhty, Ermekeyevsky district, and her mother, Gabida Gilyazhetdinovna Kudasheva, was from the famous village of Klyashevo, Chishminsky district, where Mustai Karim and Farida Kudasheva come from. A commission from Leningrad noticed a talented girl and invited her to study at the Bashkir department of the famous choreographic school. She was then only nine years old. There she met her teacher Natalya Alexandrovna Kamkova, who saw Guzel’s extraordinary talent, natural grace and musicality, diligence and patience.

In the beginning of war, Guzel had to return to Ufa and work in a ballet troupe to dance solo parts in the corps de ballet and opera performances. In 1943, the young ballerina left for Perm, where the Leningrad Opera and Ballet Theater and the choreographic school were evacuated. Here she met with her beloved teacher Natalya Kamkova again. But a year later, Guzel went to Ufa to work on the ballet "Crane Song". She graduated college only in 1947, By that time her repertoire already included such mature works as Chopin's “Seventh Waltz” and “The Crane Song”. The pinnacle of her career was the part of Mary in Boris Asafiev's “The Fountain of Bakhchisaray”, that was her debut on the Ufa stage in 1945.

From 1947 until the very last days, the life and name of this outstanding ballerina was connected with the Bashkir State Opera and Ballet Theatre. At this theater, Guzel Galeevna managed to continue the academic traditions of the Leningrad ballet school, enriching them with national flavor. There was formed a brilliant creative duet of Guzel Suleymanova and Fauzi Sattarov.

She created a number of memorable stage images at the Bashkir Opera and Ballet Theatre: Odette-Odile in Pyotr Tchaikovsky's “Swan Lake”, Zaytungul in Lev Stepanov's and Zagir Ismagilov's ballet “The Crane Song”, Zarifa in Alexander Klyucharev's “The Mountain Tale”, Tao-Khoa in “The Red Poppy” by Reinhold Gliere, Kitri in “Don Quixote” by Ludwig Minkus, Gulnazira in ballet by Nariman Sabitov.

One of the most brilliant and memorable works of Guzel Suleymanova was the role of Galima in the ballet “The Black Faces” by Khalik Zaimov and Alexander Chugaev, where the ballerina's artistic gift was fully revealed, creating a vivid image of a Bashkir girl.

Fragments from the ballet "The Crane Song" by Guzel Suleymanova and Fauzi Sattarov were performed during their tours in England, Scotland, France and other countries. Newspapers were published with great reports about Soviet dancers.

In summer 1964, Guzel Suleymanova and Fauzi Sattarov went on tour in Cuba with a great triumph. The local audience fell in love with their performance of "Waltz" to the music of Isaac Dunayevsky. It seemed that the walls of the theater were about to collapse, the frantic audience applauded endlessly and demanded an encore.

In 1952, Guzel Suleymanova was awarded the high title of "People's Artist of the BASSR". After successful performances in "The Crane Song" and "Laurencia" during the decade of Bashkir art in Moscow in 1955, she was awarded the title of People's Artist of the RSFSR.

Guzel Galeevna lived a very short life. She died on April 14, 1969 at the age of 43 and was buried in Ufa.
